Horrifying Brooklyn Gang Rape Case Takes a Turn After Alleged Victim Makes Earth-Shaking Confession
BY CONOR SWANBERG
A bombshell case last month put five teenagers in jail after an 18-year-old girl accused them of raping her in a park in Brooklyn, while her father was threatened with a gun and chased off.
The story spread nationwide, leading to the arrest of five suspects, all teenagers.
Denzel Murray, 14; Shaquell Cooper, 15; Ethan Phillip, 15; and Onandi Brown, 17, and Travis Beckford, 17 were charged with the rape—but now the charges are being dropped.
According to PIX 11 News, the girl who accused the five boys has now recanted her entire story, effectively ending of the trial.
Not only that, but she says she was having consensual sex with her father before the boys were even involved.
At the time of their arrest, the teens actually told law enforcement officers that same story, though it seemed hard to believe.
Still, officers obtained a cell phone video from one of the teens that seemed to support their claims. In the video, the teens approached the father and his daughter having sex in the park, then asked if they could join in.
According to The New York Post the father “staggered off” and tried to use the phone at two delis, but the workers said that they could not understand him because he was too drunk.
He eventually waved down a patrol car, claiming the teens had threatened him with a gun before raping his daughter. Now it has been determined that the father’s story was entirely false.
Security footage of the crew at a local convenience store before the incident helped police locate the five alleged criminals:
Investigators say that the case was riddled with inconsistencies from the get go. No gun could be found, and a rush to judgement made the case increasingly difficult.
District Attorney Ken Thompson released a statement on the case:
“The complainant has recanted her allegations of forcible sexual assault and the existence of a gun, and she does not wish to pursue criminal charges against any of the defendants. She also refuses to cooperate with any prosecution against her father, who was engaging in sexual conduct with her.”
“That night, this young woman’s father and the five young men engaged in conduct that was reprehensible and wrong, but because of the lack of reliable evidence, criminal charges simply cannot be sustained.”
“It is my fervent hope that this young woman gets all the support that she needs going forward. My office, including our victim advocates who have been working with this young woman, stand ready to provide her with any assistance she may need.”
All of the charges have been dropped, and the five teens have been released.
