Allah Says

“O you who have believed, let not a people ridicule [another] people; perhaps they may be better than them; nor let women ridicule [other] women; perhaps they may be better than them. And do not insult one another and do not call each other by [offensive] nicknames. Wretched is the name of disobedience after [one’s] faith. And whoever does not repent – then it is those who are the wrongdoers” [Qur’an 49:11]

Assalamu ‘Alaikum. This is a huge topic because Islaam is a religion which promotes equality, brotherhood and abolishes falsehood in more than a million ways. From gathering the kings and slaves together in the row of our daily prayer to spreading the Islamic greeting (Assalamu ‘Alaikum) to every Muslim irrespective of him being rich or poor, white or black, – Islam not only preaches, but also helps us implement equality in a variety of easy ways.
This topic is not only related to pure racism based on color or tribe ,but this also has to do with different parameters such as manners, equality, and etc which are related to racism. There are just too many ahadeeth and examples to quote on this topic, This subject is a vast one indeed. Hence I will try my best In sha Allah to make it short but up to the point , so please be patient ๐Ÿ™‚

Can you imagine if everyone in the world becomes civilized and mannered such that the poor become equal to the rich in regards to treatment, and the strong become alike the weak in regards to preference? Without lecturing ahead, i will assume that the title of this sub topic (I) is sufficient to help the reader gauge the importance of manners to eradicate and abolish racism.
Almost every other hadeeth and religious book in Islaam has a chapter/book dedicated to narrating the manners of the prophet (s.a.w) , his companions (sahaabas) and the righteous predecessors (salaafus saaliheen) so much so that it is difficult to compile or collect them all in a blog post. So one can understand the importance of manners. However a few more hadeeth below just to add a touch to this topic for those who aren’t aware.

One of the root cause of racism is arrogance. A person’s arrogance causes him to differentiate between himself and others in a racist way

Do not walk proudly on the earth; your feet cannot tear apart the earth nor are you as tall as the mountains.[ Qur’an 17:37]

O mankind! We have created you from a male and a female, and made you into nations and tribes, that you may know one another. Verily, the most honourable of you with Allฤh is that (believer) who has At-Taqwa [i.e. one of the Muttaqun. Verily, Allฤh is All-Knowing, All-Aware. (Al-Hujurat 49:13)

Asbaab Al Nuzool (Cause of the revelation of this verse)

This verse was revealed on the occasion of the conquest of Makkah. When it was time for prayer, the Holy Prophet asked Sayyidna Bilal to call the adhan. One of the pagan Quraish cynically remarked: “Thank God that my father died before this happened, and he did not have to see this bad day. Harith Ibn Hisham remarked: Could Muhammad not find anyone better than this black crow to sound the adhan in the Sacred Mosque! Abu Sufyan said: I do not wish to utter anything for fear that the master of the heavens will inform him. Thus Jibra’il came down and informed the Holy Prophet about this conversation. The Holy Prophet called then and asked them about it. They admitted. At this, the current verse was revealed. [Maulana Muhammad Taqi Usmani – Ma’ariful Quran – Volume 8 – Pages 143-144]
Nevertheless, Tafseer Ibn Katheer mentions a similar story, further explaining the meaning of this verse and he stated a long hadith at the end of which the prophet (s.a.w) gathered the people and said :

(11) O you who believe! Let not a group scoff at another group, it may be that the latter are better than the former; nor let (some) women scoff at other women, it may be that the latter are better than the former, nor defame one another, nor insult one another by nicknames. (12). O you who believe! Avoid much suspicion; indeed some suspicion is sin. And spy not, neither backbite one another. Would one of you like to eat the flesh of his dead brother You would hate it. And have Taqwa of Allah. Verily, Allah is the One Who forgives and accepts repentance, Most Merciful [Al Hujarat 49: 11-12]

There are more verses enjoining equality and good manners and forbidding defaming or slandering such as surah Al Humazah and etc but I’ll keep it short. All these qualities (manners, equality and etc. are the foundations to build on so as to demolish racism)

1) The Prophet (s.a.w) foretold about people being infected with pride and racism
Abu Malik al-Ashari narrated the Prophet (SAW) said: โ€There are four matters of jaahiliyyah (ignorance) that exist among my ummah and they will not give them up: boasting about oneโ€™s forefathers, casting aspersions (slander/insult) upon peopleโ€™s lineages, seeking rain by the stars and wailing for the dead.โ€ [Sahih Muslim (Vol. 2 pg. 644) No. 934]
Abu Huraira said: Allah’s Messenger (SAW) said: Indeed, Allah does not look to your faces and your wealth but He looks to your heart and to your deeds.” (Sahih Muslim, #2564).
2) Prophet (s.a.w) thus preached for unity and equality and to give the rights.

Allaah says: {The believers are but a brotherhood.} [Surah al-Hujuraat (49): 10]

Narrated Anas: the Prophet ุตู„ู‰ ุงู„ู„ู‡ ุนู„ูŠู‡ ูˆุณู„ู… said, “None of you will have faith (imaan) till he likes for his (Muslim) brother what he likes for himself.” [Bukhari]
Narrated Abdullah bin Umar: the Prophet ุตู„ู‰ ุงู„ู„ู‡ ุนู„ูŠู‡ ูˆุณู„ู… said, “A Muslim is a brother of another Muslim, so he should not oppress him, nor should he hand him over to an oppressor. Whoever fulfilled the needs of his brother, Allaah will fulfill his needs; whoever brought his (Muslim) brother out of a discomfort, Allaah will bring him out of the discomforts of the Day of Resurrection, and whoever screened a Muslim, Allaah will screen him on the Day of Resurrection.” [Bukhari]
Narrated Abu Hurairah: the Messenger of Allaah ุตู„ู‰ ุงู„ู„ู‡ ุนู„ูŠู‡ ูˆุณู„ู… said,”Allaah helps the servant as long as the servant helps his brother” [Muslim]
Narrated Nauman bin Bashir: the Messenger of Allaah ุตู„ู‰ ุงู„ู„ู‡ ุนู„ูŠู‡ ูˆุณู„ู… said, “The parable of the believers in relation to the kindness, mercy and compassion they have for each other, is that of the body: when an organ of it falls ill, the rest of the body responds with fever and sleeplessness.” [Bukhari]
Narrated Abu Musa: the Messenger of Allaah ุตู„ู‰ ุงู„ู„ู‡ ุนู„ูŠู‡ ูˆุณู„ู… said, “A believer to another believer is like a building whose different parts enforce each other.” The Prophet then clasped his hands with the fingers interlaced (while saying that). [Bukhari]
1) The topic of manners and the verses of the Qur’an which speak about being humble, merciful and best in manners and character are general commandments applying upon all. Hence a Muslim when ordered to be of good manner and character, has to be so with both a Muslim as well as a Non Muslim.

A number of the sons of the Prophetโ€™s companions reported on the authority of their fathers: The Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, said, โ€œIf anyone wrongs a person protected by a peace treaty (Non Muslim), detracts from his rights, burdens him with more work than he is able to do, or takes something from him without his consent, then I will plead for him on the Day of Resurrection.โ€
[Sunan Abu Dawud, Book of Leadership, Number 3052, Sahih]
4) Narrated ‘Abdullah bin ‘Amr: The Prophet said, “Whoever killed a person having a treaty with the Muslims, shall not smell the smell of Paradise though its smell is perceived from a distance of forty years
[Sahih Bukhari Volume 4, Book 53, Number 391]
5) Hisham reported on the authority of his father that Hisham b. Hakim b. Hizam happened to pass by people, the farmers of Syria, who had been made to stand in the sun. He said: What is the matter with them? They said: They have been detained for Jizya. Thereupon Hisham said: I bear testimony to the fact that I heard Allah’s Messenger (may peace be upon him) as saying: Allah would torment those who torment people in the world
[Saheeh Muslim Book 032, Number 6328]

3) Prophet (s.a.w) makes no difference between a rich or a poor or one who is honored in the society or not with regards to the punishment of Allah

Al-Bara’ b. ‘Azib reported:
There happened to pass by Allah’s Apostle (may peace be upon him) a Jew blackened and lashed. Allah’s Apostle (may peace be upon him) called them (the Jews) and said: Is this the punishment that you find in your Book (Torah) as a prescribed punishment for adultery? They said: Yes. He (the Holy Prophet) called one of the scholars amongst them and said: I ask you in the name of Allah Who sent down the Torah on Moses if that is the prescribed punishment for adultery that you find in your Book. He said: No. Had you not asked me in the name of Allah, I would not have given you this information. We find stoning to death (as punishment prescribed in the Torah). But this (crime) became quite common amongst our aristocratic (upper/rich) class. So when we caught hold of any rich person (indulging in this offence) we spared him, but when we caught hold of a helpless person we imposed the prescribed punishment upon him. We then said: Let us argree (on a punishment) which we can inflict both upon the rich and the poor. So We decided to blacken the face with coal and flog as a substitute punishment for stoning. Thereupon Allah’s Messenger (may peace be upon him) said: O Allah, I am the first to revive Thy command when they had made it dead……(cont :]
[Ref: Sahih Muslim Book 17, Hadith 4214, Sunan Ibn Majah : Arabic : Book 20, Hadith 2655]
‘A’isha reported that the Quraish had been anxious about the Makhzumi woman who had committed theft, and said: Who will speak to Allah’s Messenger (may peace be upon him) about her? They said: Who dare it, but Usama, the loved one of Allah’s Messenger (may peace be upon him)? So Usama spoke to him. Thereupon Allah’s Messenger (may peace be upon him) said: Do you intercede regarding one of the punishments prescribed by Allah? He then stood up and addressed (people) saying: O people, those who have gone before you were destroyed, because if any one of high rank committed theft amongst them, they spared him; and it anyone of low rank committed theft, they inflicted the prescribed punishment upon him. By Allah, if Fatima, daughter of Muhammad, were to steal, I would have her hand cut off. In the hadith transmitted on the authority of Ibn Rumh (the words are):” Verily those before you perished.”

O Allah, whoever is given charge over my nation (ruler) and he is harsh with them (his subjects), then be harsh with him; and whoever is given charge over my nation and he is gentle with them, then be gentle with him.โ€

Aisha reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, never struck a woman with his hand and neither a servant, and he never struck anything with his hand except when he was struggling in the cause of Allah; and the Messenger of Allah did not take revenge for anything against himself but if the sacred law of Allah was violated, he would take retribution for the sake of Allah; and the Messenger of Allah was not presented two matters except that he would choose the easier one as long as it was not sinful, but if it was sinful he would be the furthest of the people from it.

Abu Bakr reported: The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said, โ€œHe will not enter Paradise who is evil to his slaves.โ€
[Musnad Ahmad, Number 32, Hasan]
Abu Musa reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, said, โ€œWhoever frees his slave-girl and then marries her will have a double reward.โ€
[Sunan Abu Dawud, Book of Marriage, Number 2053, Sahih]
Narrated Abu Huraira:
The Prophet said, โ€œWhen your servant brings your food to you, if you do not ask him to join you, then at least ask him to take one or two handfuls, for he has suffered from its heat (while cooking it) and has taken pains to cook it nicely.โ€
[Volume 7, Book 65, Number 370 : Sahih Bukhari]
Note: There are numerous ahadeeth on this topic.

Amir ibn Wathila reported: Nafi ibn Abd al-Harith met Umar at Usfan and Umar had employed him as a collector in Mecca. Umar said to him, โ€œWho have you appointed as a collector for the people of the valley?โ€ He said, โ€œIbn Abza.โ€ Umar said, โ€œWho is Ibn Abza?โ€ He said, โ€œHe is one of our emancipated slaves.โ€ Umar said, โ€œYou have appointed a freed slave over them?โ€ He said, โ€œHe is learned in the Book of Allah the Exalted and he is knowledgeable of the religious commandments.โ€ Umar said: It is as your Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said, โ€œVerily, Allah raises the status of a people with this Book and he debases others.โ€
[Sahih Muslim, Book 4, Number 1780]
“Narrated Anas bin Malik: Allah’s Apostle said, “You should listen to and obey, your ruler even if he was an Ethiopian (black) slave whose head looks like a raisin.”
[Sahih Bukhari, Volume 9, Book 89, Number 256]
Moreover, a slave is not be addressed with hurtful words. The Prophet of Mercy stated not to address them as, โ€˜My slave boy or my slave girl.โ€ He said, โ€œAll of you are salves of God!โ€ Address them with, โ€œO my young man, O my young lady!โ€[Sahih Muslim]
Umar ibn al-Khattab, the second ruler-caliph of Islam, was so fond of Salim, a freed slave, that he wished to appoint Salim to be the ruler-caliph if he were alive. Salim used to lead the Muslims in prayer, considered an honor in Islamic tradition.

“Narrated By ‘Ata bin Abi Rabah : Ibn ‘Abbas said to me, “Shall I show you a woman of the people of Paradise?” I said, “Yes.” He said, “This black lady came to the Prophet and said, ‘I get attacks of epilepsy and my body becomes uncovered; please invoke Allah for me.’ The Prophet said (to her), ‘If you wish, be patient and you will have (enter) Paradise; and if you wish, I will invoke Allah to cure you.’ She said, ‘I will remain patient,’ and added, ‘but I become uncovered, so please invoke Allah for me that I may not become uncovered.’ So he invoked Allah for her.”
Sahih Bukhari, Volume 7, Book 70, Number 555:
“Narated By Abu Huraira : A black man or a black woman used to sweep the mosque and he or she died. The Prophet asked about her (or him). He was told that she (or he) had died. He said, “Why did you not inform me? Show me his grave (or her grave).” So he went to her (his) grave and offered her (his) funeral prayer.”
Sahih Bukhari, Volume 1, Book 8, Number 448:
Note: Notice that Muhammad (s.a.w) was upset because they did not inform him of the black person’s death! Also notice how prophet (s.a.w) offered the funeral prayer AFTER the black person was buried and in the grave. That’s how concerned and favourable he was.
Narrated Abu Huraira: At the time of the Fajr prayer the Prophet asked bilal , “Tell me of the best deed you did after embracing Islam, for I heard your footsteps in front of me in Paradise.” bilal replied, “I did not do anything worth mentioning except that whenever I performed ablution during the day or night, I prayed after that ablution as much as was written for me.”
Sahih Bukhari, Book #21, Hadith #250
Note: Bilal (r.a) was a black Ethiopian slave before Abu bakr freed him from the atrocities inflicted upon him due to his acceptance of Islaam

“The prophet, peace be upon him, said: “All mankind is from Adam and Eve, an Arab has no superiority over a non-Arab nor a non-Arab has any “superiority over an Arab; also a white has no superiority over a black nor a black has any superiority over white except by piety and good action. Learn that every Muslim is a brother to every Muslim and that the Muslims constitute one brotherhood. Nothing shall be legitimate to a Muslim which belongs to a fellow Muslim unless it was given freely and willingly. Do not, therefore, do injustice to yourselves.”
