The Last Ten Days – Nights Of Ramadaan – Various Scholars

The Last Ten Days/Nights Of Ramadaan

From The Book: Mukhtaar Lilhadeeth Fi Shahru Ramadaan
Which Is A Collection Of The Sayings Of Various Scholars

All praise is due to Allaah, He who created mankind from dust. He created us different – as we witness he gave preference to some over others with regards to good and lofty akhlaaq and manners.
He also preferred some generations to others by making them have authority over the lands and others He made subservient to their enemies, all this from His great wisdom.
And as we witness also, He allowed for whomever He wants, to be obedient out of His mercy, or disobedient out of His anger!! So He chooses who will worship Him, He chooses whom He gives ability to and whom He does not. Indeed a sign for us all to judge whether He is pleased with us or not, whether we are treading the path of obedience or sin, whether we will be from the people of paradise or from
those of the hell. May Allaah save us all and give us forgiveness and mercy.
We thank Allaah in every situation, and we thank Him continuously for the many blessings and the preference He has given us over others. I testify, that there is no deity worthy of worship but Allaah, alone He is in his kingdom, He alone knows what revolves in the skies and the earth. And I testify that Muhammad (sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam) is his last and final messenger sent to mankind instructing them to be obedient to Allaah and worship Him alone with no partners.
Indeed Allaah out of His wisdom, He has preferred some periods of the year over others. He has made from these periods of His choice opportunities to attain great rewards. These periods He has made for all his creation as an opportunity to raise their ranks in his sight, seek closeness to him, attain forgiveness, and change their lives from disobedience to obedience.
So as He preferred the month of Ramadaan to all other months, He has preferred the last ten nights and the last ten days over all other nights and days of this month. Let us see what we can do to reap the benefits of these blessed days and how we can benefit from this final period.
From the most apparent good deeds and benefits of these last days are:

• How the prophet (sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam) strove harder in these last ten days more than any other day of Ramadaan.

As is narrated in Muslim, from the hadeeth of ‘Aa’ishah that: “the prophet (sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam) used to strive in the last ten as he would not strive in other than them.” We must make every effort, in freeing ourselves from the worldly affairs. Give up those things we love the most whether it is work, play, family and so on.

• He used to liven the nights of the last ten days.

As is reported from ‘Aa’ishah (radiyallaahu anha); “when the last ten would come, he (sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam) would liven the nights, awake his family, prepare, and tighten his waist belt. [Agreed Upon]
Tighten his waist belt means – forsake his wives for busying himself with worship and solitude. So we can clearly see from this how the prophet (sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam) used to understand the importance of these days by his increase in worship, obedience, taking benefit from this blessed period.
What have we done in our lives to liven the nights? Do we wake up our families and children? Do we recite Qur’aan and ponder over it, do we strive to learn our religion? Is it not proper for us to emulate our prophet? Is it not proper for us to take him as our role model? He indeed is our model, he is our example, and his sunnah is what we aspire to follow. May Allaah have mercy on us all. Allaah says:

“Indeed in the messenger you have the most perfect code of conduct.”

And Allaah also said:

“if you truly love Allaah then follow me, Allaah will love you, and forgive you your sins, Allaah is most forgiving most merciful.”

Let us all strive in our worship in these last ten days; let us not even waste one hour of these blessed days and nights. None of us know whether we will live to see these days and nights again, being snatched away from our loved ones, our friends, and wealth. Death! The place of every person on this earth. When our appointed time comes, our age has come to an end, we then become regretful, at a time when regret has no benefit. We may then be of those who stand before Allaah pleading:

“O Allaah sends us back so we may work righteousness in that which we left.”

Also from the good deeds and specific benefits of this month, these last ten nights is that:

• in it is the night of power.

Allaah has made this night a special night by revealing a verse in the Qur’aan about it. “Verily we have revealed it in the night of power” [Al Qadr:1] also Allaah described this night as blessed: “Haa, Meem, by the great book, indeed we revealed it in a blessed night, we were indeed warners…” [Ad-Dukhaan:1-2].
In this night the angels descend, and they descend in numerous numbers because of the many blessings in this night. These angels descend as they descend when a person is reciting the Qur’aan, as he attends a gathering of knowledge, bringing down with them mercy. Along with these angels is Ar Rooh – Jibreel (alayhis-salaam)
Allaah described this night as ‘salaam’ (peaceful), shaytaan cannot cause any evil or harm in it. And it is as Mujaahid described: safety, security and tranquillity from punishment and threat on account of the obedience to Allaah the slave is performing. [Majaalis sharu Ramadaan p105]
In the (Night) is made distinct every affair of wisdom – meaning every matter for the forthcoming year leaves the Al-Lawh Al-Mahfooz (the Preserved Tablet) and descends, everything to do with length of life, sustenance, every aspect of our lives. Every person is judged this night, with no editing and no change [Tafseer Ibnu Katheer 4/137-138] the angels then come to know what is to take place this coming year, they understand their instructions and orders as before this only Allaah knew of it.

• Allaah will forgive whomever stands up this night to pray with imaan holding himself to account for the numerous sins he/she has done.

In these ten nights those who perform the night prayers – Qiyaamul Lail will achieve a tremendous reward so much that the messenger (sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam) said:
“Allaah has said; I have prepared for my righteous slaves that which no eyes have ever seen, no ear has ever heard, and no human heart has ever felt” then the prophet (sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam) read the following verse: “they prevented their sides from their beds, calling upon their lord, out of fear and hope, and they gave from that which Allaah provided for them. So no soul knows that which has been hidden for him from the pleasures of the eye a reward for that which they use to do”
The Messenger (sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam) said:

“whoever fasts in Ramadaan out of imaan and holding himself to account will be forgiven for his past sins.” [Agreed Upon]

Out of imaan, and holding himself to account – means here trusting and believing in the warnings and promises of Allaah, seeking His reward, not for showing off or other than that.
The odd day is where the night of power will descend as the messenger (sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam) said:

“be aware of the night of power in the odd nights of the last ten nights.” [Bukhaaree]

• I’tikaaf (seclusion in the masjid for the purpose of worship)

The Prophet (sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam) said:

“whoever performs I’tikaaf with me, then let him perform it in the last ten days” [Bukhaaree]

The prophet (sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam) performed I’tikaaf every year until he died, then his wives continued his sunnah.
The Ultimate Reward: for our sincere worship, and striving, tiredness and hardship for the sake of Allaah is nothing else but Paradise, gardens underneath which rivers flow. Allaah – The Most High said:

“gardens of paradise which the merciful one has promised his worshippers… they will not hear therein evil speech only peace, and they will be given their sustenance morning and evening. That is the paradise which only our worshippers will inherit, those who are pious.”
[Maryam v61-63]
